The theme for 2025-26 is \u201c5-minute Dostoevsky\u201d and the deadline for submission is April 1, 2026. The entry form, as well as information about formal specifications and prizes can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/dostoevsky.org\/society\/international-dostoevsky-society-video-competition\/\">here<\/a> (and below).<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<p><strong>Reflections on \u201c5-Minute Demons\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The IDS\u2019s first International Dostoevsky Video Competition was held in honor of the Bicentennial of Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky\u2019s birth, the 150<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary of the novel\u00a0<em>Demons\u00a0<\/em>(<em>Devils<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<em>The Possessed<\/em>), the 50<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary of The International Dostoevsky Society, and the XVIII International Dostoevsky Symposium, held in Nagoya, Japan in August 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The inaugural competition was entitled \u201c5-Minute <em>Demons<\/em>.\u201d Conceived as a novel experiment, we truly did not know what to expect and were astonished by the results. Eight films from 6 countries \u2013 including China, the United States, Germany, Russia, Brazil, and Bulgaria \u2013 were submitted for consideration by amateur filmmakers (some of whom belonged to student collectives). The jury was impressed by the professional conceptual and technical quality of the films, all of which offered original interpretations of motifs from<em> Demons<\/em>. The Grand Prize winner was\u00a0<em>Les Gents<\/em>\u00a0by Dmytro Memari Fard (Dresden, Germany); the film was a striking representation of Kirillov\u2019s suicide. Our jury also selected two finalists, which included the theatrical\u00a0<em>Matryosha\u2019s Song<\/em> by Ivan Dobchev, Dimitar Sardzhev, and Kiril Prodanov (Sofia, Bulgaria), and the rhythmic\u00a0<em>Buktreyler \u00abBesy\u00bb<\/em> by Anna Dubrovina and Anastasiia Zhurba (Barnaul, Russia).<\/p>\n<p>All of the films submitted for consideration remain available on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@ids-internationaldostoevsk6572\/featured\">our open-access IDS YouTube Channel<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/www.youtube.com\/@ids-internationaldostoevsk6572\/featured__;!!LIr3w8kk_Xxm!va71AHeM_pI_FKZGiCU_j4cb29AcOOC9oPKFNDF8GrwD32dW2gVWEDN-iFbnb3AFGBolDK71L4QixoDHBk8qRuw%24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c5-Minute Dostoevsky\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For our second Video Competition, the IDS has decided to invite films that capture a wider range of topics. Participants are free to interpret all manner of themes and motifs from the life, work, and legacy of Fyodor Dostoevsky. The only strict limitation that remains is length: submissions must be 5 minutes.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Details<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Topic<\/strong>: A video in any genre related to Dostoevsky\u2019s life, works, or themes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Length<\/strong>: No longer than 5 minutes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Language<\/strong>: Videos may be in any language or even wordless, but must include subtitles in English, Russian, or Spanish.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jury<\/strong>: Composed of the IDS Board of Directors and invited specialists.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Format<\/strong>: Upload the video to YouTube or Vimeo. Provide the link and password for access (see the application form for details).
