This happened with me. A few days after Deborah’s death, I was given a letter that she had written two years before that sad news. The fact that I had not received the message at the time was just accidental. To receive it at the time of Deborah’s Sorokoviny is a sign from above, a sign of fate. In October 2019 Deborah congratulated me on my 70th jubilee celebration. Leaving out some of the specific wording associated with the genre, I engage now in a dialogue.

D.A. Martinsen: It is hard to believe that we have been friends for 36 years now. We met in autumn 1983 at the Chteniia at the Dostoevsky House-Museum in then-Leningrad. I was a graduate student doing dissertation research in Moscow. Igor Leonidovich Volgin, with whom I was taking a class at the Journalism School, told me of the conference, so I attended. I remember only one paper – Lyudmila Saraskina’s paper on khromonozhka – because of the scandal Georgii Mikhailovich Fridlender created afterwards. He went livid with rage at Lyudmila’s contention that Marja Lebyadkina’s lameness was emblematic of a crippled rather than a holy mother Russia. In the ensuing moments, you, along with Igor Leonidovich and Vladimir Viktorovich, stood to defend her. A brave defense I will never forget.

Comment: Deborah entered the International Dostoevsky Society with great energy. In the summer of 1983, which she spent in Moscow, she participated in the Vth symposium of the IDS, which took place in Cerisy Castle in France. From that time on her life was tied with the International Dostoevsky Society. Of course, she was interested in Russian Dostoevsky studies as well. By will of circumstance, she found herself at the center of events, when during the discussions of the 1980s there took place a change in generations, a change in paradigms in the research on Dostoevsky, and Soviet Dostoevsky studies became Russian. I remember the conference that Deborah is writing about, I recall L.I. Saraskina’s paper on the khromonozhka, but I do not recall our polemics with G. M. Fridlender well simply because at that time the dispute with the authorities was no longer unusual. I recall Deborah’s image, her character, her sincere and emotional reaction to what was going on around her. The young and active American made an impression on me.

We met a few years later. In August 1987 I was in the USA giving lectures as a Fulbright Visiting Professor; I was warmly welcomed by Robert Jackson, Robert Belknap, Nadine Natov, Victor Terras, Charles Moser, Donald Fanger, Robin Feuer Miller, and Nadezhda Zhernakova; at Columbia Deborah took care of me. She loved New York; I saw the city with her eyes, the eyes of Bob Belknap, and I fell in love with New York. I recall to this day the strong impression I had at a symphony concert in Carnegie Hall, which I attended upon the invitation of Deborah’s husband Randall Butler, who played in the orchestra. I am an experienced connoisseur of classical music (at any rate, my wife graduated from conservatory!). I. Stravinsky’s “Petrushka” was not my favorite piece, but the magnificence of the concert hall, the fine performance and the sensitively selected repertoire shook my imagination. The concert ended, but the music continued to play in my head; at night in the hotel I woke up several times from happiness-the music played, Stravinsky triumphed. A marvelous and unexpected event!

Я – At one point as early as December 1987 Nadine Natov said that the American colleagues would like to participate in the conferences in the Staraya Russa museum. She continued: “we can come to Staraya Russa, but we have to stay in a hotel in Veliky Novgorod. We are told that there are no comfortable hotels there, but we are prepared to stay in any conditions.” I ask: “what do you need”? “To get a visa we need to get an official invitation from the Museum.” “All right; there’s not much time, who should be invited?” We decided to include American scholars of The Brothers Karamazov. Deborah was on that list, as the youngest participant of the upcoming conference. A few weeks later I went back to Russia; processing the invitation turned out to be a difficult problem, there was some kind of secret military plant there, and it took the influence and authority of D. S. Likhachev, and the efforts of many people, to ensure that the Americans could come to the conference and stay in Staraya Russa. In this way, thanks to this conversation Staraya Russa became a town that was open to foreign tourists. Martinsen: We met again that winter, when I was again in Leningrad and attended your dissertation defense. Olga Alekseevna then generously invited me to the after-party – an event emblazoned in my memory. We met again in 1988 at Staraya Russa, when Bob Belknap, Bob Jackson, Nadine Natov and I attended the Chteniia. We also participated in the memorable excursion to the nearby monastery, the dinner at the priest’s trapeznaya – where Sergei Belov created a Fyodor Pavlovich-like scandal, and, back in Starya Russa, the dinner hosted by Father Dmitry Grigoriev.

Comment: There’s a small anachronism here. The trip to Staraya Russa described so vividly by Deborah was in May of 1988; my dissertation defense at Leningrad University took place a year later, in June 1989. Deborah’s presence at my defense was a great surprise for me: I did not know that she was in Russia at that time. At the banquet, even with her modesty and tact, she was the soul of the scholarly group. I am glad that we shared together my successful defense of Dostoevsky’s System of Genres.

D.A. Martinsen: Thereafter we met about every three years at IDS Symposia, but also when you came to the United States in the 1990s, and I arranged talks for you at Columbia and Princeton. Thanks to Bob Belknap, you returned to New York in 1998 for the Xth International Dostoevsky Symposium at Columbia as part of the largest ever delegation of Russians to attend a Symposium. Here you spoke on Dostoevsky as a journalist and editor. You also bought a computer to bring back with you – a harbinger of your future work.

In 2007, at the Symposium in Budapest, Boris Nikolaevich Tikhomirov told me that you gave the speech that made me the first woman president of the IDS. We were glad when we agreed, we were not offended when we didn’t; we were brought together by shared projects, conversations at Symposiums, work in the IDS Board. As she worked on IDS matters, Deborah constantly recalled the advice that “Nadine and the two Bobs” gave her. She devoted many efforts to realize Nadezhda Anatolyevna’s wish to conduct an IDS Symposium in Moscow. It is symbolic that it took place in 2013 in the Solzhenitsyn House of Russia Abroad. Dostoevsky brings everyone together.

Deborah exaggerated the intentionality of my “academic policy” to rely more on women than on men.
